INTERIOR

The cities in the interior are mainly agricultural centers

Liberia

Liberia is the capital of Guanacaste province. The province is best known for its huge livestock farms and beautiful beaches. The city of Liberia was founded in 1769 on the banks of the river of the same name. Liberia is a quiet place and mainly because of its location on the Interamericana it is the base for visits to the beaches of Nicoya and the parks in the north of the country, such as Rincon de la Vieja and Santa Rosa. The old houses in the town are built of adobe stone, made from the white volcanic soil of the Rincon de la Vieja. Liberia is therefore also called "the white city". Beautiful examples of this can be found in the center. Outside of Liberia is the country's second international airport. The Daniel Oduber airport is mainly used for charters with tourists staying on the coast of Nicoya. There are also flights from Belgium.

Turrialba

This city is located 37 km east of Cartago on the foothills of the volcano of the same name. Due to its location, close to the volcanoes Irazu and Turrialba and the Guayabo excavation site, the city is a meeting point for volcano visitors and archeology enthusiasts. But it is also a meeting point for white water sports enthusiasts. Many places offer facilities for kayaking and white water rafting. Just outside the city lies the agricultural technical research center CATIE. On an area of almost 1000 hectares. experimenting with tropical agriculture. The laboratories, greenhouses and testing grounds can be visited. (book in advance)

Fortuna de San Carlos (La Fortuna)

   arenal

The Arenal Volcano rises above La Fortuna. Unfortunately, the volcano has not been active since the end of 2010. Trekkers can explore the low slopes that rise to the Arenal and hike the ancient lava fields in the national park, or head to the Rio Fortuna Waterfall, a pretty waterfall southwest of the city. Take a refreshing dip here after the steep descent.
